Featured Excerpt: Jennifer Jackson

Tell us a little about you……!     Hi all, My name is Jennifer. I am 21 years old and live JJ 3.in Canada. I am in university studying biochemistry and just trying to make the best out of my life.

When & why did you decide to go natural?    You see, my story is different; I have always been natural although I did not practice proper hair care. I never did much to my hair but wash and braid it with extensions every month or so. My hair length stayed just  a little past shoulder length so I thought that this was the length I was destined to have. However, about 3 years ago, I started to straighten my hair A LOT. As a result, I ended up with HEAVY heat damage and breakage. At the time, I did not know what is was but just knew something had to change. So my story is a transition from heat damage to healthy hair.

Were your friends and family supportive of your decision? If not, how were you able to move forward? My family, JJ 2.especially my mom did not approve of my decision to cut my hair. She said that it would never grow back. We even got into an argument  about it. My brothers also said not to cut it but they were more supportive then my mother was. As a result, my family affected the decision to not big chop but rather transition instead. I transitioned for 5 months and then drastically started to cut the damaged ends of. My boyfriend has always been supportive of any decisions I made so I was able to move forward.

How long have you been natural for?   I have been natural my entire life. My mother put a texturizer in my hair when I was 8. It didn’t last long as the texturixer broke my hair off and my natural hair grew back. I have been on this healthy hair journey for a year and six months and “big chopped” a year ago. JJ

What’s your regimen?   I suffered badly from product junkie-ism! Lol I jumped from bandwagon to bandwagon until I realized I needed rehab! Lol I try to keep it REALLY simple now. I wash and deep condition my hair once a week. I apply a leave in and seal with an oil. Then I will normally style my hair in twists using some type of butter or pomade and leave the twists in for a week. Once a month, I do a Cassia/amla hair treatment and that is all. Keeping it simple has been working marvellously for me

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?  I have learned that my hair LOVES water and low manipulation. The more I leave my hair alone (to a certain extend of course) the more it flourishes. I have also learned that what might work for someone will not necessarily work for me. As stated before, keep it simple.

What has been your favourite product?   -Shampoo bars: I find that they are less drying   -Conditioners: Especially Herbal Essences Totally Twisted -Butters: Do not like raw shea butter but prefer lighter butters such as cocoa butter   -Oils: love them all (olive, castor, coconut & amla)

JJ 9 months Do you have any hair goals? What steps are you taking to achieve them? Now that I have cut off the heat damaged ends, my goal is to keep my hair as healthy as possible meaning no heat appliances unless for a special occasion. I have not flat iron my hair in over a year now. I have been focus on length lately as well and protective styles are helping me achieve this goal.

What has the biggest milestone you have faced in your hair journey?  The biggest milestone I have face is to find simple ways to style my hair. Because I always just have braids, I realized I wasn’t familiar with my natural hair and how to style it.

How did you overcome this milestone?   Thank God for YouTube!!! I have learned a JJ 1.lot from it and how to style my hair and tame it lol

You love your hair because?

I love my hair because it is thick, versatile and beautiful

Featured Excerpt: Dawn Williams

Where do you live?
I live in the US/New York....

Dawn Williams (5) Why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go Natural 2yrs ago bc I always wanted to care for my hair in its natural state but I didn’t know how. Thank God for hair care forums and YT. But my hair was damaged from me not taking care of it like I should have been... I was wearing wigs all the time, and not doing anything to my hair. So I had to shave it all off (BC) again  (14mths ago) and started from scratch to get my hair healthy. I didn’t want to put anymore chemicals in my hair I wanted to take care of my hair in its natural state.

Were your friends and family supportive of your decision? If not, how were you able to move forward?
Yes my  family was very supportive and friends also, my best friend decided to go natural also around the same time I did, and my mother has been natural ever since I knew my mother...lol :-) My son is very supportive through my Natural journey especially when I wanted to go back to wearing wigs again he'd say something like "Oh it looks like your' given up" and that comment just made me remember why I started this Natural Journey.

How long have you been natural for?
I’ve been natural for 14 months (bc I haven’t put any chemicals in my hair for 2 1/2 yrs.), but the first yr I wasn’t doing anything to my hair so I had to shave it all off bc of the damaged.  So I just like to tell ppl that I’ve been Natural for 14mths.

Dawn Williams (4)  What’s your regimen?
Oh wow...Hold on girl... OK... My regimen...here we go...

1. wash hair 3-4 xs a week or Once a week.
2. I always Deep Condition my hair when I wash my hair.
3. I always do some kind of pre-poo b4 shampooing.
4. After washing hair (shampooing, detangling, deep condition) I always use a leave in conditioner.
5. I let my hair air dry always I never use heat to my hair (unless its a heating cap).
6. I moisturize my hair twice a day, and seal in the moisture using some kind of oil (my fave is coconut oil).
7. I never use a brush or comb I only comb my hair in the shower (using wide tooth shower comb), and I like using my fingers to comb through my hair.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
Mistakes I’ve made to my hair that I learned from is that I have to keep my hair moist using a water based product not oil based. My hair loves water so I make sure when I’m moisturizing my hair that the product is water based. If the product is filled with oils I use it as a sealant.

What has been your favourite product?
I use so many different products I don’t know which is my favourite....OK I'll choose; Taliah Waajid "Protective Mist Bodifier"

What is your ‘SIGNATURE’ style?Dawn Williams (2)
My Signature style is my "Afro Puff" its simple and I can jazz it up with a hair flower or a cute headband.

Dawn Williams (1)

What has been your biggest challenge during your hair journey? And how did you overcome this challenge in your journey?
My biggest challenge was feeling like ppl wouldn’t like my hair in its natural state. I over came this by having a big supportive circle with my natural sista on YT, and just learning that God made my hair the way it is, so it really didn’t matter what others thought about me and my hair.

What is your ultimate hair goal? What steps are you taking to achieve that?
My ultimate hair goal is to have healthy hair. What I’m doing to have that goal is to stick with my hair regimen. Since I’ve been sticking to my hair regimen my hair has gotten thicker and I am also retaining length. I also like to give my hair treatments like henna, and Ayurvedic Indian Powders.

Are there any words of encouragement/advice you would like to offer to those Dawn Williams (3)that are considering going natural?
If anyone is thinking about going natural just make sure that its what you really want to do not what others are telling you to do. If/when you do decide to go natural remember its all about patience, and that your hair is yours what may work for others may not work on your hair. Its all about trial and error when it comes to finding the best product, and water is a Natural girl's BFF.

What does 'good' hair means to you?
"Good Hair" to me means "Healthy Hair"

The TRUTH:   This is my second favourite oil after amla oil, again I know it has some naughty ingredient(s), nevertheless, it works great. I use this also as a pre-poo overnight oil, the smell i a lot more delicate in comparison to amla oil. I do like the smell and the members of my household do not complain at all. One member stated their liking for the smell *shocking*. As they all use to gag and gave me stank look when I use amla.

One way I have used it and find it to be brilliant is when I have in extensions. It works well on the scalp during this time; I do the same pre-poo/bagging either overnight for a couple of hours, then I will co-wash and then M&S the length of my braids, it help to keep my scalp clean and hair strong during the time I have my hair in hiatus. I am will be using this oil in my hair for the next 3 months.

Naked Smooth Conditioner (s)

Naked Smooth Silky Conditioner – straight or longer hair
Promises: Keeping hair kink free can be high maintenance. So we use jojoba oil because it's a super rich, deeply conditioning liquid wax that coats the hair shaft to help naked_19[1]reduce frizz and give hair the appearance of satin sheets.
Using plant based conditioning ingredients, this effective formulation reforms rebellious hair, getting it back on the straight and narrow by creating long term moisturisation and reduced static without the heaviness of petrochemical residue build up.

Ingredients: Aqua, Cetearyl alcohol, Brassicamidopropyl dimethylamine, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Glycerin, Aspartic acid, Jojoba wax PEG-120 esters, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, Dicaprylyl ether, Lauryl alcohol, Citric acid, Parfum, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Limonene, Hexyl cinnamal, Linalool.

Directions: After washing, squeeze out excess water. Massage evenly through hair for a minute or two, then rinse away. Gently combing through will help tackle any tangles before rinsing off.

The Truth: This conditioner is of a thick and heavy consistency, I thought woo this has to be good. Because my hair loves thick conditioners and it soaks them up well. So this is how I went about using this conditioner, I shampooed my hair scalp {can not remember what I used}, then t-shirt blot out some of the water, then I went to work by applying this conditioner to my hair small sections. Straight I way I notice the lack of slip there is, it is thick and sorta coaty feel when I rub it b/n my fingers. I had difficult trying to detangle with my wiiiide tooth come and so i used my fingers, which was not that easy either.

I managed to get it through my hair and I cover my hair with a steam cap and went under my dryer for a steam for 30-40mins.

I let the hair kool and then proceed to rinsing my hair in sections, it rinses out well and there was no residue, the hair felt slightly coated, like the feeling I had experience b/n my fingers. It did not moisturized well, it sort-a made my hair felt heavy and slightly weighed down and felt also kind-a clumpy.

I honestly was not impressed with this conditioner to be honest. I don’t think I will revisit this conditioner again to be honest. I used it up mixing and dabbing it in other stuff just to get rid of it. As I never throw out a conditioner lol.

Ayurvedic: Methi(Fenugreek) Powder

Fenugreek, Methi Powder, Greek Hay or Trigonella foenum-graecum, is an herb that grows in warm semi-arid regions of the world, especially the Middle East. It is an annual herb from the bean family that grows up to 20 inches in height.

It produces light yellow flowers and emanates a fragrance that persists on hands after touching. Its seeds are powdered and used as a spice.

Fenugreek seeds have many healing benefits, and can ease poor digestion, painful menstruation and increase breast milk, as well as aid in diabetic treatments.

Ground fenugreek seeds can help heal burns and boils; mixed with oil, it can also make hair shine, silky and can aid in promotion of hair growth when applied to the scalp.
As listed above methi (fenugreek) powder have many benefits and uses, the main benefit I will be looking at, is its benefits for the hair and scalp.

Uses of Methi (Fenugreek) Powder for the Hair:    This natural herb boasts of very potent seeds that help treat balding, hair fall and thinning of hair. Boil the methi seeds and soak them overnight in coconut oil in order to form the hair tonic. The following morning, massage your hair with this mixture for six minutes while concentrating on balding areas. Perform this action daily over several months and you will surely see the difference. Not only is methi effective in treating baldness, but it is also beneficial in preventing dandruffs.

My Methi (Fenugreek) Powder Experience:

170220114687 170220114688

170220114689 170220114690

I did a methi (fenugreek) powder mix, I used warm boiled water to make the paste, and I used about 2-3 tablespoon of the powder to mix the paste. The powder has a onion/garlic/herb smell, which at first I was like hmph I wonder how this will make my hair smell afterwards. But the smell grow on me, also the next thing I discover is you need to use as little as possible, I don’t think you will need 2-3 tablespoon, I found that out when I mix it.

Here is how it goes, you are suppose to soak the methi seeds over night in water and the next morning you grind it to a paste. What  did was I got the powder, so i mix my powder according to the measure with warm water overnight and allow it to sit, when it sits overnight, the mucilage forms and this is a good thing as you get a lot of paste and the powder is more than able to give good coverage. Doh I use way to much, I honestly only need a heaped table spoon or at the most and heap tablespoon and a half.

Anyways, I got up the next days and I apply it to dry hair, methi (fenugreek)powder can be to cleanse the hair and scalp. I thought let me see how well it works on its own with the use of shampoo. I apply as shown in my pics above from my scalp to ends THOROGHLY covering both hair and scalp. I let this sit on my hair for about 1-2hrs maybe 3hours lost track of time. I had also covered it with a shower steam cap, you DO NOT WANT the powder to dry in your hair.

After this time I proceed to rinse my hair in the sections that was duck clipped up with warm water. It seem to rinse out easily because of the mucilage. After I rinse each section once at time (there are 4 sections). I thought this is pretty kool as my hair left silky, smooth, strong and conditioned at the same time. BUT to my surprise……….,

180220114693 180220114694

There was grain left behind, NOW these gains of methi (fenugreek) powder reminds me ever so much of ‘coarse gain cornmeal’. They did not bother me as I notice that once I apply my DC and detangle that this ceased the gains out well from my scalp and hair and by the time I come to rinse again after my DC steam a lot if not all was rinse completely out.

Now with that being said THIS is HOW I feel about Methi (fenugreek) powder; I honestly liked it and I have used it many times since I wrote this review. It makes my hair feel so silky and it has been helping me since I discover it with my transition. Because it make my NG so silk and it almost eliminate the demarcation b/n the two texture; it seem smoothes over the line of demarcation so I am able to work with both texture without breakage.

Did I mentioned I had bought a 1kg of this powder *shamed face* lol The other thing I like about this powder is I a use a lot of other ayurvedic powders, such as Amla Powder, Brahmi Powder, Henna. In the past before meth (fenugreek) powder. I had to use twice these powders to get enough for a through coverage. Now with methi (fenugreek) powder due to the forming of the mucilage. I can use it and it helps to stretch the volume of these powders, so where I had to 200g of the powders mentioned above, I now use 100g and a heaped tablespoon of methi powder and let it sit overnight for mucilage and the swelling of the powder.

The only thing I can say that I notice is that it does not cleanse the scalp as well as I thought it would. So if you have build up on the scalp then you need to shampoo to get rid of that. Other wise the methi powder works perfect and I am really pleased with this powder. I wished I had realized its true potential and benefits when I first researched it years back.

It is perfect for stretching the volume of your other ayurvedic powders, it makes your hair silky, it smoothes the hair shaft/cuticle, it strengthens and it conditions. Also as a bonus it is suppose to promote growth with continual use. My next experiment is to make a methi (fenugreek) powder tea to use to rinse my hair with while I have my hair in extensions…., stay tune for the review.

So I can say I will be using this powder for a very loooong time to come as I like the results it has yield.

Au Naturalista

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Where do you live?
I live in Bremen,Germany.

Tell us a little about you……!
I'm 18 years old and from Ghana (my parents) but I was born in Germany. I'm doing my general qualification for university entrance at the moment. I have 8 more months to go before I'm finally free!

Why did you decide to go natural?
I decided to go natural because my relaxed hair was damaged. I had a lot of breakage and I was tired of losing my hair all the time.

Were your friends and family supportive of your decision? If not, how Tracy Helmers (3) were you able to move forward?
Two of my friends are already natural so they encouraged me. My mum was very supportive because she herself would like to go natural too.

How long have you been natural for?
My big chop was on July 13th but I've cut my hair again 4 times since then. Since August 3rd I'm letting it grow.

What’s your regimen?
Right now I don't really have a regimen. I wash my hair every to every second day and co- wash a lot too.

 Tracy Helmers (4)

Have you experienced any set backs in your journey? What have you learned from them?
I had a lot of setbacks when I was relaxed but since I'm natural my hair is growing faster actually.

What has been your favourite product?
My favourite product will always be Organic root stimulator deep penetrating conditioner!

Tracy Helmers (2) What is your ultimate hair goal? What steps are you taking to achieve that?
MBL! Moisturize and seal! Co-wash! and Deep conditioning!

What is your ultimate hair goal? What steps are you taking to achieve that?
If your tired of torturing your hair you SHOULD go natural! After all it's what God actually gave you, why not accept it? And for those who are not sure if natural hair looks good on them just try it out.. if you don't like it you can still relax!

You love your hair because?
Because it's me! It's who I am and supposed to be!

You love your hair because?
Because our natural hair is different and looks good! We should be proud of what we have!

Hair Care Ingredients: Part I

Acetamide MEA - Water soluble conditioning agent compatible with anionic and nonanionic systems as opposed to quaternary surfactants compatible only with cationics, adds shine.

Alcohol - A general term for organic ingredients that contain the OH (hydroxyl) group. Alcohols differ substantially in their properties ranging from water soluble solvents like isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, ethyl alcohol (used by breweries, the only drinkable alcohol) through moisturizing agents like glycerine or propylene glycol to fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol and sugars (multi alcohols).

Algae Extract - Extracted from seaweed and pondscum, rich in minerals, algae extract is claimed to prevent wrinkles, very moisturizing.

Algal Polysaccharides - Extract from red marine algae gathered off the Hawaiian coast known for its moisturizing potential and lubricity.

Allantoin - Water soluble crystal known for its ability to help heal wounds and skin ulcers and to stimulate the growth of healthy tissue.

AMP (Aminoethyl Propanol) - An organic pH adjuster used to maximize the effects of styling products.

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate - The ammonium salt of lauryl sulfate derived from the natural coconut alcohols, it is a mild anionic surfactant widely used at acidic (mild) pH values.

Amphoteric Surfactants - Those in which the active molecule bears both positive and negative charges. Their properties depend upon th pH of the system and they may behave like anionics or cationics. Some of the finest amphoterics are used in shampoo systems formulated for dry or chemically treated hair due to their mildness and light conditioning properties.

Annatto Extract - A food grade vegetable dye from a tropical tree, yellow to orange.

Annionic Surfactants - Those in which the active molecule bears a negative electric charge. These surfactants are primarily used as cleansing agents in relatively mild shampoos for oily or normal to oily hair.

What mistakes have you made with your hair that you’ve learned from?
*Relaxing hair too often (every 6 weeks!): My scalp became severely damaged and I lose hair.
*Using too much heat: I try air dry almost every time I shampoo, and do no-heat styles (braid outs, buns, Bantu knots) Azucarmoreno 1c

What has been your favorite product?
Coconut oil: I use it as a prepoo, moisturizer, sealer...and on my skin. I love it!

What is your ‘SIGNATURE’ style?

Most days I bun, it's the quickest/easiest

What has been your biggest challenge during your hair journey? And how did you overcome this challenge in your journey?
Dealing with NG during my stretches! It is still challenging.

Azucarmoreno 1b What is your ultimate hair goal?
My hair goal is to to reach BSL or MBL with full, healthy shiny hair and scalp.

What steps are you taking to achieve that?
*I have been using too much heat lately, but I plan on going back to no-heat styles on regular basis,
*continuing trimming my hair until all the damaged hair is removed.
*stretching my relaxers to allow my scalp time to heal
*reducing the sue of blow dryers and direct heat (curling/flat irons)
*Oiling my scalp and doing prepoos and DC's (using sulfate-free shampoos) Azucarmoreno 1d
*Doing protective styles

Are there any words of encouragement/advice you would like to offer to those that are texlaxed?
Texlaxing does work, it gives the versatility of a relaxer, but still allow some of the texture to remain and it makes hair look thicker  and healthier.

What does 'good' hair means to you?
Healthy hair, regardless or hair type, texture, length or ethnicity.
